Galena boys rout Fallon

To say that Galena boys basketball coach Tom Maurer was pleased with his team's effort would be an understatement.

"We played the best basketball we've ever played," said Maurer after his team dismantled Fallon 62-41 in a game that wasn't that close. The Grizzlies improved to 5-2 in the High Desert League.

"We played great defense," Maurer said. "It was just an outstanding basketball game.

"They rebounded well. They took smart shots and they took care of the ball."

Galena led 46-19 going into the fourth quarter. Derek Lorenzen scored 26 points and Tommy Myers had 17 points for Galena.

Maurer also praised the defense of Dalton Turnbow, who held Walter Lewis, who had a huge game on Friday against Reed, to seven points. Maurer also praised the defense of Whip Thompson.

DAYTON BOYS 59, NORTH TAHOE 39

The Dayton boys basketball team used another strong defensive effort to roll past North Tahoe. Dayton moved into a second place tie in the Northern 3A league with Rite of Passage at 8-2. Manogue is in first at 9-1. Lowry, which was beaten by Fernley, 43-41, fell to 7-4 in league play.

Dayton and ROP will finish a game that was suspended due to a power outage at 5 p.m. Monday at ROP. The game will be picked up with ROP leading 21-13 with 5:53 left in the second quarter.

The Dust Devils jumped out to a 16-6 lead and outscored North Tahoe 17-6 to lead 43-25 after three quarters.

"Our defensive effort has been what's carried us all year and I hope it will carry us a few more games," Dayton coach Rob Streeter said.

Jake Deen had 17 points and 12 rebounds, Brian Lahmann scored 15 points and Nick McQueen added 14 points for Dayton.

FERNLEY BOYS 43, LOWRY 41

Fernley outscored Lowry 13-7 in the fourth quarter to pull off the upset. While just 2-9 in league play, Fernley coach Dave Burns said he believes his team can make a run for one of the league's six zone playoff berths.

The Vaqueros led 25-17 at halftime before Lowry outscored Fernley 17-5 to take a 34-30 lead after three quarters. Matt Kramer scored 14 points and Cody Wagner added 10 points for Fernley.

"It basically came down to us playing really good defense," Burns said. "We took care of the ball.

"We did a good job down the stretch of making sure we grabbed every rebound. That basically is what won the game."

FALLON 49, GALENA GIRLS 46, OT

After missing her first free throw, Joanna Hixon made the second with no time left in regulation to force a 44-44 tie and overtime for the Galena girls basketball team. But Fallon outscored Galena 5-2 in overtime for the win.

Terrin Johnston hit four three-pointers on her way to scoring 20 points and Hixon added 17 for Galena, which led 28-21 at halftime. Fallon outscored the Grizzlies 12-5 to tie the game 33-33 after three quarters.

With the loss, Galena (4-3) fell into a virtual three-way tie for second in the High Desert League with Fallon (5-3) and McQueen (5-3).
