Roth wins 3,000 meters in Silver State meet

Carson City's Cassia Roth turned in a strong effort to win the women's 3,000-meter run at the Silver State Invitational on Saturday.

Roth, a Carson High junior, won the event in 10 minutes, 27.29 seconds. Roth was competing for the Silver State Striders in the meet held at the Bill Cosby Track at the Reno Livestock Events Center.

Meanwhile, Galena High's Janine Bodo and Julie Hinton had strong performances for the University of Nevada women's track team, which dominated the meet. Bodo won the weight throw with a throw of 53 feet, 11 inches while Hinton placed second in the mile (5:24.30).

Also for Nevada, Shante Winters won the 400 (56.66) and Nicole McRae won the 800 (2:13.62). Jenna Huber placed second in the 3,000 (10:31.36).

In the field events, Stephanie Tietjen won the shot put (47-4 1/4) and Abrianne Wiles won the pole vault (12-0) for Nevada.

"It was good to have our first home meet," Nevada coach Curt Kraft said. "I know the ladies were really excited to run here this week in the first of four straight at home. We won five events and I guess what really stood out were the throwers, winning the short and weight throws.

"It was a great way to start. Of course, it's not how you start, it's how you finish. We have room to improve but this was a good start."

In the men's meet, Maurice Mann, a running back for the Nevada football team, won the long jump in 22-8. Since Nevada doesn't have a men's track team, Mann competed unattached.
