A Carson City Jail inmate tried to hang himself with his socks Thursday afternoon, but was revived by a jailer, said Sheriff Kenny Furlong.
The inmate's name is not being released, pending an investigation.
"We're conducting a critical review of the situation," said Chief Deputy Rick Keema.
The man was found within a few minutes of hanging himself and was reportedly not breathing. A call went out at about 3:15 p.m. for emergency responders.
Keema would not describe exactly how the inmate managed to hang himself.
The suicide attempt happened during a shift change at the jail when it is locked down, Furlong said. The inmate was discovered during a routine head count, Keema said.
The inmate was transported by emergency crews to Carson-Tahoe Hospital, where his condition will be evaluated.
"I believe he's going to be OK, but I haven't gotten an update," said Keema late Thursday.
The inmate was a local man, Keema said, who's "been in the area for quite some time."
His parole was revoked Jan. 4.
"We're basically just housing him before he goes to prison," said Keema.
The man left no note or explanation for his attempt at suicide, said Keema. "One could surmise that he didn't want to go to prison," he said.
Since its opening more than 30 years ago, there have been five suicides in the Carson City Jail, according to published reports.
