Two new directors appointed to TRPA board

Newly appointed Carson City supervisor Shelly Aldean was named by fellow board members Thursday as Carson's representative on the governing board of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

Aldean replaced supervisor Jon Plank last month following his death in December. Plank was a member of the planning agency board for the past two years.

Mayor Ray Masayko said he received calls from the agency's executive director Juan Palma and others in the Lake Tahoe region who encouraged him to appoint Aldean.

Aldean's father developed Glenbrook Bay, and she told governing board members she is familiar and experienced with issues in the basin. Aldean, 46, is president of the family business, the Glenbrook Co. and Eden Managements in Carson City, a land development and property management company.

No other Carson supervisors said they were interested in serving on TRPA's governing board. Several members said Aldean had far more experience in issues at the lake than they did.

"I'm a glutton for punishment, what can I say?" Aldean joked Thursday, after being asked to assume the responsibility. "I would be more than happy to serve."

Aldean has selected interim City Manager Andy Burnham as her alternate on the governing board.

The bi-state regional planning agency is charged with preserving, maintaining and restoring scenic, natural and manmade environmental aspects of the Lake Tahoe region. Its governing board is made up of local, state and national representatives appointed by various entities.

"Shelly has been around the lake for a long time," said Palma. "She brings history and personal knowledge of the lake. She also brings, in my mind, an interest in affordable housing. She has attended some of our affordable-housing meetings. She'll bring all those pieces to the table. I am excited about (her appointment)."

Aldean said she is in the process of developing an affordable-housing project in the Dollar Hill area of South Lake Tahoe. Her family also owns property at Glenbrook and a parcel of stream environment zone, the development rights of which have already been sold, she said.
