Carson Girls Softball has decided to join the National Softball Association, also known as NSA.

CGS is a non-profit organization for Girls Fast pitch Softball that was previously associated with ASA and Bobby Sox, which offers play for girls ages 4 through 14. It is a recreational league that requires that everybody play, no matter what their ability, from first time players through seasoned veterans.

During the last week of January, Dave Young, President, and Shannon Withrow, Vice President, attended a meeting in Reno along with presidents and representatives from other Northern Nevada Girls Fast pitch softball leagues. Many of the leagues were dropping their current national association and one of the alternatives was NSA Girls Fast pitch Softball.

CGS and other leagues from Northern Nevada liked what was being offered. Young and Withrow discussed the possibilities of becoming a part of NSA and decided to bring it to the board. On Thursday, Jan. 23 the CGS board unanimously voted in favor of joining the National Softball Association. Others who have joined NSA include the Carson Valley Softball program.

Joining NSA Girls Fast pitch softball will not change the existing league. It will still be a recreational league, everybody plays. The benefits that it will bring to the program will improve the league's overall play. It will open the door for the league to have post-season play against other towns and to form a tournament team for a higher level of play. It will give the girls a chance to play in local, regional and state tournaments. It will even give the league the opportunity to play out of state tournaments and the opportunity to host NSA tournaments in Carson City while bringing in teams from out of state.

With the advent of the local community college, Western Nevada Community College, starting up an athletic program and offering women's softball next year, CGS believes that by joining NSA the league has an opportunity to be exposed to a higher caliber of play thus preparing girls that want to compete at a higher level for the possibility of playing even right here in their own community. The CGS board also believes that this move is what is best and fiscally sound for the girls of Carson City and the community as a whole.

Carson Girls Softball is also holding a late signup for whoever is still interested both this Sunday, Feb. 9 and Sunday, Feb. 23 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Edmonds Sports Complex in the center of the softball field four-plex on Livermore off of Edmonds.
