Gardnerville's 125 birthday will be celebrated with a series of events spread over the summer.

"It will begin April 5, the actual day (the town was founded), and events will extend over several weekends and follow through into the summer," said Anet Sewell, president of the Gardnerville Business Association, which is sponsoring the festivities.

By most accounts, Gardnerville was settled April 4, 1879, when founders John and Mary Gardner established themselves in Carson Valley.

The Gardnerville 125th Birthday Advisory Committee met last week to plan the event. They will host a public meeting Feb. 26,.

Sewell said the committee decided to incorporate a time capsule into events with participation from area schools.

"We have all kinds of ideas," Sewell said. "But we are looking for more, like what to put in the time capsule."

The committee consists of two board members, two members of the Gardnerville Business Association, and two residents.

Events could include a community barbecue, a town history exhibit at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center and a time capsule.
