120 YEARS AGO

The Chinese New Year began yesterday. But owing to dull times among the Chinese, their noises are somewhat abridged this year, for which we have reason to be thankful. One member of the Legislature paid out $100 for two days' sleigh riding this week, or so he says.

100 YEARS AGO

Early yesterday, J.W. Spurgeon, one of the best known residents of this city, died at his family home of pneumonia. He was a pioneer, settling in this valley in the early '60s. He was a native of Ohio, aged 69 years. He leaves a loving wife; daughters, Mrs. Cecil, Mrs. Fryer, Miss Florence and Miss Bell Spurgeon; and son, William.

70 YEARS AGO

The reception given to members of the Legislature last evening by the Chamber of Commerce was well attended. Two whistling solos by Mrs. Zeb Kendall and Mrs. Christopherson and clever tap-dancing numbers by Marion Ducker, Carolyn Bordewich and Betty Fodrin. George Meyers' orchestra furnished the music for dancing.

50 YEARS AGO

Bills appeared in the Senate calling for bond issues totaling $240,000 for construction of additional buildings at the state children's home in Carson City, a mental hospital in Sparks, personnel headquarters, a Carson Hospital wing and two cottages.

20 YEARS AGO

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program will sponsor a Capital City Fair at Fuji Park, says Janice Ayres, director. The group plans to buy a tent.

10 YEARS AGO

The Sierra Intermountain Emergency Radio Association will meet in Minden in the Douglas County Library to hear Jim Goodfellow, who recently took over as earthquake program manager for Nevada's Division of Emergency Management.
