An inmate of the Carson City Jail tried to kill himself Sunday by drinking several cleaning solutions, according to Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong. Inmate Jeffrey Smith, 31, is receiving treatment at Carson Tahoe Hospital.
His was the second suicide attempt at the jail in four days after an inmate tried to hang himself with his socks on Thursday.
Smith ingested several cleaning solutions inmates use during routine daily cleanup procedures, said Furlong. After he experienced breathing difficulties and told jail staff what he had done, Smith was immediately taken to the hospital.
"He's very uncomfortable, but stable," Furlong said.
Smith is being held on three counts of contempt of court. He was arrested in Douglas County on Friday night and was booked into Carson City Jail at 12:44 a.m. on Saturday, said Furlong. His contempt charges are related to second-offense driving under the influence and an alcohol-related larceny.
His wife was arrested at the same time. She was booked into Lyon County Jail in Yerington on contempt of court charges there.
Jeffrey Smith was scheduled to be in court early this week.
