The Carson City Regional Transportation Commission may decide Wednesday whether to purchase the First Christian Church on East John Street to allow for extension of Stewart Street.
Commission members decided to formally explore either purchasing the property or swapping city-owned land with the church in December. Staff now is recommending the commission offer to purchase the property outright for $750,000, according to a staff report.
"After completing a search of city-owned lands available for exchange, it appears the best option may be to purchase the church directly," said John Flansberg, transportation manager, in the report.
The purchase would be paid out of road construction funds, the report said.
An appraisal done by the city estimated the property's value at $750,000. If the commission paid cash, it could acquire the land outright without the approval of the city's Board of Supervisors.
The commission will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, 851 E. William St.
