MINDEN - After five losses, Douglas High's boys' basketball team was long overdue for a victory.

And, thanks to the reappearance of Nick Summers to the offense, and seven fourth-quarter points by reserve Zach Tretton, the Tigers ended a disappointing season with a solid 67-50 win over North Valleys Friday night.

The Tigers finished with a 7-19 record, including 3-9 in Sierra League play.

"It was a good way to end it," said Douglas coach Keith Lewis. "It wasn't always pretty, though. We made some good transition plays in the fourth quarter.

"Zach played some big minutes for us tonight. He took advantage of the opportunity. He matched up well with North Valleys. Nick played a lot better. You can't have him only get three shots like he did Tuesday (against Wooster)."

Summers, who finished with 20 points and six rebounds, scored seven in a 15-5 third-quarter surge that gave the Tigers a commanding 50-39 lead after three periods.

North Valleys trimmed the lead to 52-46 with 5:50 left in the game, but the Tigers went on a 15-4 run to end it and Tretton was right in the thick of things.

His two hoops in a 36-second span gave Douglas a 56-48 advantage. Luke Rippee knocked down two free throws, and Tretton scored on another layup to make it 60-48 with 3:18 left. After two North Valleys free throws, Douglas hit seven foul shots in the final three minutes to secure the win.

Chris Honer also scored eight for Douglas. Rippee and Eric Emm ended with seven each.

The Tigers closed out their Sierra League schedule with a 7-5 record after their demolition of North Valleys.

The game was decided in the middle two periods when Douglas outscored North Valleys 31-6. North Valleys failed to score in the third quarter, and didn't make a field goal the entire second half against Douglas' pressure defense.

Erin Brinkmeyer scored 10 of her game-high 19 in the second and third periods, and Emily Haas added eight of her 18 in the same span. Jessie Kizer added seven points.

"Hopefully we can continue that effort Tuesday," Douglas coach Werner Christen said, referring to his team's opening-round playoff game against Reed of Reno. "They won 20 in a row, so you know they are good. We're going to go in there loose and get after them.

"This was an important game in terms of getting some flow and more confidence. This was probably the most complete team victory we've had. Everybody did some good things out there tonight."
