120 YEARS AGO

The chimes on the steam whistle at Bliss & Co.'s new box factory in South Carson are decidedly musical. They are a great improvement on the shrill, discordant sounds that are emitted from the ordinary whistle.

100 YEARS AGO

Headline: "A Just Measure" -- Yesterday, the Assembly passed a bill introduced by Mr. Cushing that covers the ground unoccupied since the orphans' home was established. Provision of the bill is to admit children that parents are incapable of caring for, either through death or other causes. Key was "inability of the parent to support and care for such a child."

70 YEARS AGO

Mrs. Irene Murray, one of the most well-known residents of Carson, dies. She was born here on Nov. 28, 1876, and in 1902, married William H. Murray, a native of Carson. He was postmaster, and at his death, she was appointed to fill his unexpired term. She later joined Bell Telephone and was remembered for her charitable acts.

50 YEARS AGO

Assembly once again adopted a resolution calling upon Congress to repeal a law that prohibits sale of liquor to Indians 39-5. Ely Assemblyman Paul Norris commented, "The Indians are as entitled to drink as any of the Irish I have ever seen."

20 YEARS GO

Larry Delaney, a planning technician at the Nevada Department of Transportation, is this year's recipient of the Carson City Sertoma Club Service to Mankind. He has multiple sclerosis and uses a wheelchair.

10 YEARS GO

Ten finalists named as "Junior Weathercasters" in KTVN's contest include Zachary Garner, 8, Dayton; Trevor Stice 9, Minden; and Billy Branstetter, 9, Gardnerville.
