Assembly Speaker Richard Perkins, D-Henderson, has requested legislation that would privatize the functions of the Public Works Board.

The board manages all state construction projects and has taken responsibility for designing many of the smaller projects, redesigns, repairs and expansions of state offices and other facilities.

"We want to examine the construction management side of the Public Works Board," said Perkins.

He said there seems to be a lot of duplication between the board, the university system and school districts. And he said there have been problems.

"Obviously when you look back over the past few years, it's been so successful," he said.

He referred in particular to major construction problems with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Lied Library and the Southern Nevada Veteran's Home.

The legislation was requested Feb. 10 and has not yet been introduced.
