Carson skiers medal at state meet

Danny Rotter, Devon Anderson and Chelsea Anderson earned individual medals for the Carson High School alpine ski team at the Nevada 4A State Finals Saturday at Mt. Rose.

Rotter and Devon Anderson placed second and third respectively in the boys slalom to help Carson grab a share of second-place in the team standings with one day to go in the championship meet.

Chelsea Anderson placed fifth in the girls slalom and the Senators were fifth as a team.

The meet concludes today with the giant slalom race starting at 10 a.m. in the East Bowl.

Galena emerged as the leader in a close four-way boys team race with 464 points. Carson and Reno were tied for second with 446 points, followed by McQueen with 408. The meet's combined team championship will be decided by points from the two days of competition.

"We still have a shot at it," Carson coach Jack Reinhardt said, referring to the combined team title. "If our kids have a good day tomorrow, we could be right there. Anything can happen in skiing."

Rotter sped to second-place with a time of 27.05 seconds, just ahead of Anderson in 27.11. James Reavis also finished ninth (29.74), Brett Anderson 14th (30.55), Vance Harper 31st (33.87) and Robby Lebherr 53rd (45.47) for the Senators.

Galena senior Denny Hadler won the race by a half-second with his 26.51 clocking.

"It's kind of neat, but I used to coach Denny and a lot of the kids in this league when they raced for the Falcons program up at Mt. Rose," Reinhardt said. "Denny is a good racer and a good kid."

Matt Kinsinger was fourth (27.50) and Ian Robinson eighth (29.74) to give Galena three finishers in the top 10.

Hadler also played as a reserve running back for Galena's football team last fall and in the summer races in the Legends division at Champion Speedway in Carson City.

Chelsea Anderson posted a time of 28.43 to place fifth in the girls race. Teammate Jessie Clemmensen was 21st (33.47), Greta Schnaser 40th (37.99), Sydney Parker 42nd (38.52), Erica McAfee 50th (40.66) and Dusty Brower 54th (42.18) for Carson.

Galena swept the top two places and four of the top seven to take a 478-452 lead over Reno in the girls team standings. Carson was fifth with 347 points.

Jenny Hessenbruch won the race for Galena in 26.66, followed by teammates Kristen Lingenfelter in second (27.10) and Jenny Burrows in fourth (27.71).
