Street Superintendent Riddler is doing good worm work in cleaning the street crossings of snow and ice. Miss Eva Slingerland, a Virginia City teacher, is visiting her mother, Mrs. McCabe, in this city. B.F. Small, late landlord of the Arlington House, is now an employee of the San Francisco Custom House.

100 YEARS AGO

Yesterday at noon, Chief Justice Belknap administered the oath of office to the incoming governor and lieutenant governor. The tallest swearing ever done in the state was probably done by John Sparks, as he is about 2 inches taller than any governor we have ever had.

70 YEARS AGO

At a brief meeting, the Carson City City Council allowed December claims of $1,356.66. According to figures by J.W. Legate, city clerk, this leaves a balance on hand of $2,573.12, exclusive of $1,396.41 in the bond redemption fund. Due to the financial situation of closing of banks, it was necessary to place $550 from the street fund into the general fund.

50 YEARS AGO

Organization of the newly formed Civil Air Squadron was explained to 40 persons in the civic auditorium by acting squadron commander Col. Cecil Cross, of the new group, with history by Lt. Col. Arthur Sowle of Reno.

Former Driver's License Division Chief Sharon Murphy has been named Nevada's new welfare administrator by State Human Resources Director Barton Jacka at $44,360 a year.

Sen. Harry Reid is expected to announce he has picked Reno lawyer Kathryn Landreth for Nevada's U.S. attorney.
