Seven Carson wrestlers place at event

Nick Shine came away with the title at 189 pounds to lead an outstanding effort by the Carson High wrestling team at the Nor Cal Invitational on Saturday in Anderson, Calif.

Seven wrestlers placed for Carson at the event, which is rated as one of the top five tournaments in Northern California. While team scores had yet to be tabulated, Carson coach Dean Schmanski said he believed his team placed in the top three in the event that featured 35 schools.

"To have seven guys place out of 35 teams is outstanding," Carson coach Dean Schmanski said. "It was great competition and we did very well placing seven guys. We're improving quickly."

Shine moving down from 215 to 189, was seeded No. 1 in the tournament. The Senators had four wrestlers who reached the semifinals and three who reached the finals. Paul Carter (140) and Joe Roman (152) both took second. Carter and Roman were both seeded No. 2 in the event.

Roman lost in the finals to Reno High's Mike Kummer, who is ranked No. 2 in Northern Nevada.

Chris Ceccarelli also reached the semifinals and beat Wooster's Ed Perreria, who is ranked No. 2 in Northern Nevada, to reach the third place match. Ceccarelli ended up finishing fourth after coming into the event seeded No. 7. "That was one of the more sweeter victories," Schmanski said.

Also placing for Carson were Eric Aguilera (112), who took fifth and Jason Klug (heavyweight), who took seventh. Allen Wooldridge moved up from 189 to 215 and took eighth.

Other highlights included Chris White, who moved down to 130 and won two matches. After losing two matches in a tough 145-pound class, freshman Loren Wooldridge came back to win the "hard luck" tournament.
