Douglas boys upset South Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE -- Douglas High outscored South Lake Tahoe10-0 in overtime to upset the Vikings 63-53 Saturday night in a Sierra Leaguegame.

The win was the first for the Tigers after four straight league losses, including three of the blowout variety, and improved their record to 5-13.

"I told the kids they shouldn't be surprised to get this win," Douglas coach Keith Lewis said. "They should expect it each time they come on the court.

"We got a lot of big plays from a lot of different people tonight. A lot of guys off the bench played great minutes."

The overtime was all Douglas, as Andy McIntosh and Luke Rippee snapped the 53-all deadlock with baskets to give Douglas a 57-53 lead with 2:14 left.

Rippee and Eric Emm each missed two free throws apiece, leaving the door open for the Vikings with 49.9 seconds left.

Graham Hoffman and Niko Klansek missed three-pointers, and the Vikings fouled after each miss. Both Emm and Rippee redeemed themselves by making two frees apiece to make it 61-53 with 27 ticks left. Rippee completed the scoring and his 12-point night with a layup.

South Lake Tahoe spent most of the four-minute overtime casting away from the outside. The Vikes' 6-foot-8 Curtis Johnson only got one shot in that span.

Trailing 41-36 after three periods, Douglas went on a 13-4 run to take a 49-45 lead with 5:13 left in regulation. Emm had two three-point field goals and Rippee added five points, including a three-pointer.

Johnson, who scored 18 points, scored four straight to knot the game at 49. A follow shot by Chris Honer and a free throw by Nick Summers (16 points) gave Douglas a 52-49 lead with 3:07 left. Chris Perry's three-pointer tied the game at 52 with 2:14 remaining.

Summers gave the Tigers only their second lead of the game with 1:24 left when he hit one of two foul shots. Johnson matched him with 53.3 left.

Douglas had two opportunities to snap that tie, but Summers and Rippee each missed the front end of a one-and-one situations. Klansek's game-winning try bounced off the iron, sending the game into overtime.

"We tried to leave the door open," Lewis said.

Douglas girls 66, South Lake Tahoe 42

The Tigers stretched their Sierra League winning streak to four with an easy 66-42 victory over the Vikings in a game that wasn't as close as the score indicated.

Douglas' pressure defense forced the young Vikings into 28 first-half turnovers (41 for the game), enabling the Tigers to build a 50-16 lead after two periods.

"We played well," said Douglas coach Werner Christen. "We flew around out there defensively and caused some problems.

"I told the girls it was important to start fast and we did. Julie

(Gingrich) opened up offensively which we needed."

Douglas scored the game's first 14 points, and 18 of the first 21. Emily Haas, who led the Tigers with 18 points, had eight points in the first five-plus minutes of the opening quarter.

A 16-1 run in the first three minutes of the second quarter boosted the lead to 41-11. Gingrich, who finished with 11 points, scored nine in that span.
