The Galena High boys basketball team turned the High Desert League into a wide open race with a 60-57 win at league favorite Reed on Saturday.
Reed is 3-1 in league play while Galena improved to 2-1 in league. "It's just a big win on the road," Galena coach Tom Maurer said.
Galena led throughout before Reed came back to tie the game in the fourth quarter. But the Grizzlies responded behind sophomore Derek Lorenzen, who scored 20 points.
Lorenzen made 4-of-4 foul shots down the stretch to help seal the win. Tommy Myers added 15 points for Galena.
The Grizzlies led 60-54 before Reed made a halfcourt shot for the final margin.
"The last two minutes, we put it away with great defense, great containment of their shooters," Maurer said.
Maurer praised his team's overall effort. "We were inside, outside, we did a great job of playing Galena basketball like we should," Maurer said.
The Grizzlies also were strong on the boards, Maurer said. "We did a great job hitting the boards offensively," he said. "That helped us out tremendously."
Galena also handled Reed's pressure well, scoring many times against its press, Maurer said. "We did an outstanding job taking care of it," he said.
