120 YEARS AGO

At a little past 2 o'clock yesterday morning, a shooting affair took place in Winston's Old Saloon, generally known as the Opera Hall, opposite the Opera House, and John Ross, one of the proprietors was killed by James Coombs, a gambler. Ross was picked up still living and the blood from his wounds flowed over the keno table on which he was laid and collected in pools of sawdust on the floor. Coombs had tried to borrow money.

100 YEARS AGO

Local ice men have finished cutting and storing for next summer. Nearly all the saloons and hotels have filled their private houses with the best class of ice stored in years. In many cases, the ice averages 10 inches thick. Doc Benton has his house full, Johnnie McEwen a couple of houses and Fred Wilder has plenty for his customers, and Harry Millard, not in the retail business.

70 YEARS AGO

Appeal High School Pow Wow news feature notes under "personals" that William Goni of the junior class was absent the first day of the week on account of a sick spell.

50 YEARS AGO

Freshman Legislator Richard (Dick) Waters, Sr. of Ormsby County (Carson City) was the Democratic choice for speaker pro tem of the assembly but lost to a coalition vote.

20 YEARS AGO

Lt. Gov. Robert A. Cashell, a Democrat, is president of the Senate. He and his wife have four children, Robert Jr., James, Catherine and Jane. She is the former Nancy Parker.

10 YEARS AGO

State Sen. Ernie Adler, D-Carson City, filled in Sunday for the attorney general when he pulled on the bell from the old Mint located in the state museum's bell tower in the pre-inauguration bell ringing ceremony. He was assisted by the twins, William and Meredith and older brother Ben.
