120 YEARS AGO

The hotels were so full that the Madison Square Company (slated to play at the Opera House) could get no accommodations yesterday. Dr. Lee was offered the position of physician to the Orphans Home by Messrs. Preble and Young, but declined on the ground that he was a straight Republican.

100 YEARS AGO

A lone highwayman entered the depot at Reno yesterday and, at the point of a gun, ordered W.D. Phillips, joint ticket agent for the Southern Pacific and V&T Railroad companies, to hold up his hands. The take was $300 to $400, and it caused a stir as it was a broad-daylight robbery.

70 YEARS AGO

Yesterday, the V&T Railroad was the only way to reach Carson, with heavy drifts making roads impassable. Stewart Indian School was snowed in all day, and Virginia City was isolated with both roads choked. Weather ranged from bright sunlight to blizzards.

50 YEARS AGO

Carson's grade-school basketball team beat Gerlach at Fernley. Members are Chester Wood, Lyle Nutting, Dennis Smith, Billy Oliver and Robert Moose. Also playing on coach Bill Savage's squad are Don Longero, Walter Tallas, Roderick Stanton, Ed Allison and John Armstrong.

20 YEARS AGO

Steve Young of Carson City and Connie Conley of Reno won gold medals in the downhill and giant slalom events at the 1983 Western Blind Skiing Championship at Kirkwood, Calif. They represented the Nevada Association for Blind Athletes.

10 YEARS AGO

Sheriff's Department has appointed Virgil Hammond, 33, as deputy sheriff assigned to the detention facility.
