SOUTH LAKE TAHOE -- The El Dorado County District Attorney's Office is reviewing a South Lake Tahoe police report to decide whether to file formal charges against a manager who allegedly pocketed a $100 bill from a Raley's store safe.

Assistant District Attorney Hans Uthe said Monday that his office is reviewing the police report, accounting records and videotape to determine if the case can be tried beyond a reasonable doubt, and whether there are investigative loose ends. A decision should be made by the end of the week.

Steve Weissinger, a Douglas County commissioner, was arrested June 13 for allegedly taking $100 from the Raley's Crescent V store safe. Store security placed him under citizen's arrest after the alleged incident was caught on video surveillance.

Weissinger told police it was a cash-handling error and that he intended to put the money back.

A Raley's corporate spokesperson said Monday that the company does not discuss employee issues nor would she say whether Weissinger is still employed. Also contacted Monday, a store manager said he could not talk about employees and declined to say whether Weissinger was still employed there.

A call to Raley's revealed Weissinger was not working on Monday.

He will appear in El Dorado County Superior Court on Aug. 5.
