MR. Porter Ashe, who narrowly escaped drowning and a near meeting with death in a railroad disaster in Southern California, came near to losing his life in an encounter with a black bear about a mile from McKinney's Station. He was out on a jaunt with several young ladies from Idlewild when a young bear walked out behind a rock. He fired one shot from a six-shooter and the maddened bear bore him to the ground. The teeth were caught in his hunting coat and he drew a British bull dog and fired five shots. First bear near McKinney's in years.

EDWARD C. Anderson, well known Gardnerville garage operator, died in Carson Valley. He suffered an attack of pneumonia last winter and hasn't been well since. He's survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Anderson and seven brothers and sisters at Lovelock. His father was a rancher.

PHIL Roventini, coproprietor of State Motors, was elected president of Carson City Chamber of Commerce. He will succeed E.H. (Bud) Miller. To serve with him will be George Gessler, co-owner of Sky-Vue Drive-in, as vice president.

FOURTH of July parade, according to Lenora Vecchiarelli, parade chairman, had 10 more entries than last year, she emphasized a "good parade, with family participation." Comedy winner first was Carson City Senior Center Citizen Band.
