A 17-year-old bicyclist was taken to Washoe Medical Center by helicopter after she was hit by a pickup truck in a Stewart Street crosswalk on Friday afternoon.
The girl, whose name was not revealed, was crossing the right-hand turn lane between Carson and Stewart streets in Carson City when she was struck by a Dodge Ram pickup truck about 3 p.m.
Witness Mike Millard said he was two cars back when he saw the teenager riding along the sidewalk and then disappear around the front of the pickup.
"She was riding down the sidewalk when she shot out onto the crosswalk in front of the Dodge," Millard said. "He stepped on the brakes and tried to evade her, but it didn't do any good and she flew."
Millard pulled past the accident in his car and called 911 on his cell phone.
Carson City paramedics placed the girl on a back brace and a Care Flight helicopter took her to Washoe Medical Center. She was conscious and crying as rescue workers helped her.
Paramedics estimated the girl flew 30 feet before hitting her head on a curb.
The pickup was driven by an Oregon man, who declined to be interviewed.
