The first Jon Plank Memorial Golf Tournament, hosted by Eagle Valley Golf and the Carson Sertoma Club, will start at at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

The four-person scramble tournament will be played on the East Course. A $50 entry fee per person or $200 per team is required. Several spots are still open. Five teams of four players each are welcome to join.

Single players will be paired with others, said Jean Bondiett, administrative assistant for the nonprofit group that manages the golf course. The course is owned by Carson City.

A barbecue for $10 will also be available during the day for those who want lunch but will not play.

The price includes a round of golf, a cart, a box of Nike golf balls, barbecue and "Closest to the Pin" and long-drive contests.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Eagle Valley Golf Tree Fund which was "important and dear to" Plank, organizers said. Plank, 65, died in late December from complications of pneumonia. He had served as a city supervisor for six years.

The tournament is being held in conjunction with the Carson Sertoma Club where Plank was a member for many years.

"It's kind of their way of saying thanks to him, too," Bondiett said.

The tree fund program started at the beginning of this year after several trees were blown down during a winter storm in December. The course had been losing trees for years. As a supervisor and park advocate, Plank visited the golf course many times, helping to bring in trees, Bondiett said.

"He was very interested in improving the quality of life in many different venues in Carson City," Bondiett said. "He liked the idea of getting more trees out here. There were a lot of things he wanted to help us with."

Players interested in the event are advised to sign up before Saturday by calling 887-2380 or visiting the golf course office. Payment can be made with Visa or Mastercard by phone. As the course is nonprofit, $30 of the entry fee is tax-deductible.
