Obituary: Sonia DeHart

A funeral Mass will be said at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Gall Catholic Church for Nevada native Sonia C. DeHart, 96, a Genoa resident for 62 years. Mrs. DeHart died July 18, 2003, at her home.

Born in Tonopah Sept. 28, 1906, to Victor and Elizabeth Barndt, Mrs. DeHart grew up on a ranch at Hot Creek in Nye County, where she learned to ride and rope and went on big cattle drives. She attended school in Berkeley, Calif., and then went to study ballet in Hollywood. She joined the Koslov Ballet Company and performed in ballets, operas and silent movies. She was one of the soloists when the San Francisco Opera Company opened.

She traveled and danced in many places, including New York, Europe and South America.

She was a member of St. Gall Catholic Church and several political, environmental and humanitarian organizations on the national, state and local level.

Mrs. DeHart was preceded in death by a brother, Victor Barndt, and two sisters, Elizabeth Crouse and Agnes Redenbaugh.

She is survived by her children, David Cochran of Danville, Calif., Rosemary Girolamo of Reno, Alice Cleary of Genoa, Robert Cochran of Anacortes, Wash., Robert Pope of Hot Springs Village, Ark., and Gilbert Cochran of Reno; 17 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren.

Walton's Douglas County Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
