I always enjoy an update on events that have been mentioned in this column, just to know what our community does to help others. What the proceeds will benefit is also nice to hear.

I received a follow-up on late Supervisor Jon Plank's memorial golf tournament. Jean Bondiett at Eagle Valley Golf Course said the total amount raised was $2,161 to purchase 25 to 30 trees. The winning team consisted of three generations of Carsonites -- Jake, Tony and Stephen Palazzolo, plus longtime friend Ted Tiffany.

At An Evening of Wine and Roses, I talked with organizer Toni York. Half the proceeds go to Make-A-Wish Foundation, which has helped make many terminally ill children's last wish come true, from meeting music idol Usher to seeing all the princesses at Disneyland.

We have two other golf tournaments and scholarship fund-raisers right around the corner.

The first is the Leahy Golf Tournament. Lorraine Leahy, with the help of Joe Tresnit, started a Carson High School scholarship fund in memory of her children Patrick and Erin Leahy. The scholarship helps a student who cannot afford to attend the University of Nevada, Reno. Tresnit said a $500 scholarship was given to a student from Carson High by the Leahy endowment, less than a year after the program started.

The Capital Auto Insurance's golf tournament benefits the Carson City School District Homeless Program by giving a high school student funds for a four-year vocational education. Last year, proceeds sponsored a young man in welding at Carson High. He learned a valuable trade that will help him throughout life.

You can play in both of these tournaments because they are on different weekends at different local courses that offer very different challenges.

Retired Carson High School business teacher Ken Beaton will be the new director of the Children's Museum on Northern Nevada. I have worked with Beaton on many projects and can't wait to see what he has planned. I will miss Denise Sin, the former director. and we will continue to support a museum design for every child to enjoy. Good luck, Ken!

The fifth annual Great Truckee River Duck Race is coming soon to Wingfield Park in Reno. Duck adoptions are only $5. Past prizes included trucks, trips, spas and cash. Attendees will find great food; live music by Cami Thompson, CeCe Gable and many other local artists; recital performances by singing and dancing local children; clowns; circus acts; bounce houses and other kids' attractions.

Sponsorships are available for a limited time. La-Z-Boy Furniture Gallery is the returning presenting sponsor. Sponsors committed include Safeway Stores, Circus Circus and Outback Steakhouse.

President Mike Plattsmier of Carson City Pop Warner Football and cheerleading programs has scheduled the annual Pop Warner Kick Off Day. In addition to the punt, pass and kick competition, there will be a mini carnival with an air jumper, food, pie throwing at your favorite coach and face painting. Proceeds help support the Pop Warner Football program.
