Contractor named for regional medical center

Carson-Tahoe Hospital officials have named Hunt Construction Group, the same company that built San Francisco's Pac Bell Park, as the contractor for Carson-Tahoe's new regional medical center.

"Just recently they completed Phoenix Children's Hospital in Phoenix," said Kevin Stansbury, chief operations officer for Carson-Tahoe Hospital.

"That's important, because the team that worked on that hospital will come here to work as general contractors on our project."

Contract negotiations are ongoing and should be completed next week.

The roads and site excavation is scheduled to start Monday under a separate contract. Mound House company Marv McQueary Excavating Inc. will handle the work.

"We've made it clear to Hunt Construction that using local subcontractors is an important part of the project," he said. "Hunt will be providing the general contractor service."

Contract negotiations with Hunt are continuing and should be completed next week, Stansbury said.

Based in Indianapolis, Hunt has been handling complex projects for more thn 50 years, including aviation facilities, college campus buildings, convention centers and sports complexes.

Work on the regional medical center should start in August and the project should be completed by the fall or winter of 2005, Stansbury said.

On about 60 acres between Eagle Ranch Road and Highway 395 in north Carson City, the building will be three stories high with a partial basement. Plans include a helipad and parking for 590 cars. About three times the size of the current hospital, the building will have 338,000 square feet.

Hospital officials say the new facility will mean a higher standard of care for people in the region.
