Chivas win tournament title

The Carson Chivas under17-boys soccer team won the title at the Rogue Valley Cup in Medford, Ore. over Memorial Day weekend.

Sergio Hernandez was named as the tournament's most valuable player for the Chivas. In the championship game, the Chivas beat the Southside Internationals of Portland 2-0 in overtime.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie after 90 minutes of regulation. They then played two 15-minute overtimes, with the Chivas scoring once in both extra periods. Luis Delgadillo scored both goals on assists from Martin Hernandez.

Goalie Robby Liebherr and defenders Daniel Berger, Brian Arce, Julio Deleon and Carlos Chavez combined to post the shutout.

The Chivas opened with a 5-1 win over RVCS United of Medford. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime, but the Chivas scored three goals in the second half's first five minutes to break the game open.

The Chivas then tied South Hill Revolution of Washington 1-1 and beat Eastside United of Portland 2-1. The Chivas followed with a 1-0 loss to Southside. The Chivas and Southside finished as the top two teams to advance to the finals.

Delgadillo scored six goals in the tournament, Sergio Hernandez scored twice and Martin Hernandez and Eddie Lanuza each scored once. Lunaza and Jesse Gutierrez also played outstanding at midfield.
