Casino Fandango to open in old Supply One

Carson City's newest entertainment spot, Casino Fandango, is scheduled to open Aug. 1, said Reno architect Peter Wilday.

The new business will be located at 3800 S. Carson St., known as the old Supply One building.

The project will be completed in two phases, the first including a New York Deli and a small casino area.

In addition to more gaming, the second phase will include a coffee shop, buffet, cocktail lounge and a platform/stage for entertainment. It should be completed by Christmas.

"It's going to be very tropical, very high energy. It's strictly a locals type of casino," Wilday said. "We're not changing the building, just giving it a facelift. The first phase includes 10,000 square feet and the second phase 44,000."

Access from Carson Street can be a challenge, and to alleviate the problem Eagle Station Road will run west to Curry Street from Carson Street. Plans include additional parking just south of the road, currently the home of DJ's RV Center, Wilday said.

"We can't get a signal on that (Carson Street) intersection, but people will be able to enter off of Curry Street," he said.

Kenny Hayes, service manager with DJ's, said an offer for their property was made.

"We have until October to accept it. Then, we have another six months to move," he said. "I think the owner is looking for other property just in case, but it's still too early to tell if the deal will go through."

Wilday is handling design and contracting. Carson Gaming LLC will own the property and Jack Brower, realtor with Gold Dust Properties, represents the sellers, Steiner Group of Oregon.

"We haven't closed escrow, but the prospective owners have a timeline they want to meet," he said. "So they've negotiated a lease and expect to close on the property later this year."

The project is being developed by Navegante Group, a team of international gaming and hotel executives with offices in Las Vegas and Toronto, Ontario.

Founded in1995 by long-time casino executive Larry J. Woolf, the company has developed casinos worldwide, including Bally's and the Venetian in Las Vegas, Crown Casino in Australia and Casino Niagra in Canada.

Supply One, a Reno-based firm with nine stores in Nevada, Oregon and California, closed its doors in January 2001. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August of 2000.
