Exhibit is time consuming

A hand-carved mantel clock, estimated to be 100 years old, sits atop a display case upstairs.

"It belonged to Pat Finley, the contractor who built the kitchen area of the Roberts House," said Paula Cannon, the museum's events coordinator.

"It was his parents'. It's close to 100 years old, but I really have no idea. It does work. You wind it up with a key -- and it chimes," she said.

The clock is one of about 40 time keepers in the museum's timepiece exhibit featuring clocks, watches, pocket watches, mantel clocks and more.

All items for the exhibit have been loaned to the museum by area residents and members and friends of the Roberts House.

Assisting Cannon with the display is Carson City Historical Society member Jeanell Pevey, who also loaned a few of her clocks for the exhibit.

"We wanted to show time things of yesterday with this exhibit," Pevey said.

"My favorite is the china mantel clock with key wind up. It's made by Ansonia Clock Co. in New York. All I can tell you is it's old.

"But the whole exhibit is a history of time pieces."

Cannon said some of the clocks are quite valuable, but she's not sure as to how much.

"Age has a lot to do with the value," Pevey said.

Among the 40 or so clocks on display is an anniversary clock from 1950-1960; a carriage clock, used by the French during travel, and a Swiss-made tie tack watch.
