120 YEARS AGO

It is safe to state that there is not another small town on the Pacific slope where there are so many well-read ladies as there are in Carson. It is said that Mrs. E.B. Crocker, at present sojourning at Lake Tahoe, is one of the most benevolent women on the Pacific coast. She is reported to expend many thousands each year in the relief of distress and otherwise aiding worthy people.

100 YEARS AGO

Forty-six women were arrested in Reno last evening for violating Ordinance No. 4. They were each fined $3.

70 YEARS AGO

Nineteen large filing cases full of criminal records were removed yesterday to the state prison, in accordance with a law passed by the Legislature. Heretofore, the governor's secretary has been ex-officio secretary to the pardon board. It is now R.C. Rather, chief clerk of Warden Matt R. Penrose's office.

50 YEARS AGO

Announcement was by E.H. (Bud) Miller, chamber president: George Roulette, a Carson Valley rancher, has been named general chairman of this year's Nevada Day celebration in Carson City. He was chairman of the record-breaking Carson-Tahoe Hospital benefit.

20 YEARS AGO

A picture of a stagecoach stopping at Eastgate in central Nevada is featured on the cover of the 1883-84 Nevada Bell Telephone Directory. The painting by artist Chris Kenyon is the last in a series of historical subjects.

10 YEARS AGO

Memorial services were held for James William Calhoun, 89, a Carson resident since 1941. Mr. Calhoun married Thelma Davis in 1934 in Butte. He was the state museum director for more than 25 years. He is survived by wife, Thelma; and daughter, Patricia Arias, and son, James Grant, both of Reno. He was a member of Carson Host Lions.
