Carson baseball wins two

For Ryan Henry, it was a comeback of sorts. It was also a comeback that Henry made with a bang.

Henry sat out the last part of the basketball season for Carson High with a broken finger on his non-throwing hand. So it figured that Henry was chomping at the bit to return to action.

He was given the chance on the mound Saturday during the Carson preseason baseball tournament. Henry took full advantage of his return, pitching a no-hitter in the Senators' 8-0 win over Fernley at Ron McNutt Field. Both teams had a 3-0 record in the tournament coming into the game.

Just as impressive on Saturday in a 2-0 win over Truckee was Scott DeFriez. In the five inning game, DeFriez pitched a one-hitter, striking out 10 over five innings.

CARSON 8, FERNLEY 0

Even though the game was cut short after 3 1/2 innings due to the eight-run rule, Henry's effort was still impressive. He faced the minimum of 12 batters through four innings, striking out five.

The only Fernley player to reach base reached on an error and was quickly erased on a nice double play turned by second baseman Jon Teeter. After tagging the runner going to second, Teeter threw to first to turn the double play.

"It feels great to be back out there," Henry said. "It was a little different at first, but then I got comfortable. I was really happy to be back on the mound.

"I felt pretty good. I was happy with the way I threw. I'm pretty happy how the team's working together and the chemistry."

In the first, Teeter walked, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Eric Melendez. Willie Bowman followed by driving a two-run home run over the right centerfield fence.

In the second, Cameron Leck tripled off the right centerfield wall. His shot would have been a home run had the wind not knocked it down.

After Teeter singled, Bowman followed with a two-run double off the right center field fence to make it 5-0 that was actually hit harder than his homer, but the wind knocked his shot down as well.

"It was real nice to see Will and Cameron crush the ball," Henry said. "It's really nice to get the lead and relax out there."

In the third, Neil Holmes doubledd and scored on Aaron Henry's RBI double. Leck followed with an RBI single, giving him four hits in two games. After Teeter singled, Leck went on to score on a fielder's choice to make it 8-0.

CARSON 2, TRUCKEE 0

DeFriez faced one over the minimum, walking two. Both of those runners were erased when Owen Brolsma threw them both out trying to steal. Brolsma also tripled home Carson's first run after Jason Alcasas walked.

DeFriez also received an outstanding defensive play from Hurzel, who had Carson's two other hits. Hurzel made a diving catch in right field in the fifth.

Carson made it 2-0 in the third when Brolsma walked and stole second and third. Hurzel then fought back from an 0-2 count to single home Brolsma. Hurzel also fought back from an 0-2 count for his other hit.

The Senators will finish the tournament at 7:30 p.m. Monday against Fallon.
