120 YEARS AGO

Judge Goodwin of the Salt Lake Tribune in a tribute on the death of Hank Monk, notes in episode with Greeley said that "There was, perhaps, as big a man outside as there was inside the vehicle." (This was the famous ride to Placerville. Later, Life magazine, in a double page feature, listed Hank Monk "Jehu," as a candidate with our folk heroes, Paul Bunyan, etc. as the greatest stagecoach driver of the West. Goodwin notes Monk could turn a six-horse coach in the street with the team at full run and every rein apparently loose, ending precisely where Monk wanted it.

100 YEARS AGO

P.S. Corbett, a pioneer of the Comstock and well and favorably known in this city, died in Virginia City. He was formerly deputy warden of the prison and a partner of the late John Mackay.

70 YEARS AGO

Despairing of additional compensation for extra work, in the Assembly, Will Cobb of Storey introduced a resolution for a free soup kitchen for all legislators. Cost, $14,000, to be administered by "certain lobbyists."

50 YEARS AGO

Senate adopted a resolution by Ormsby County Assemblyman Richard L. Waters, Sr. to memorialize Maj. Max C. Fleischmann and his foundation for funds for the sate museum, University of Nevada, Boy Scouts and Carson-Tahoe Hospital.

20 YEARS AGO

Former Carson City Mayor Charles "Bud" Austin dies at his home at 93. He was a charter member of Carson City Rotary and master of Carson Lodge No. 4. (He was proud of having been honored with his wife to christen a World War II ship, Carson City.)

10 YEARS AGO

Virginia City Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a St. Patrick's Day corned beef and cabbage dinner/dance, funds to go to their Christmas childrens' program, all fourth graders, gift from Santa.
