Funeral services for 37-year Carson City resident Mary Brewer Mechum, 85, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Walton's Chapel of the Valley. Visitation will be there today from 6-8 p.m.
Mrs. Mechum died March 8, 2003 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital. She was born June 12, 1917 in Winston-Salem, N.C., to Joseph Roland Brewer and Mary Myers.
She moved from San Francisco to Carson City, where she worked as a nurse on the surgical floor of Carson-Tahoe Hospital, starting in 1968. She retired in 1983.
Mrs. Mechum, a Methodist, was very active in the OARC in Carson City. She enjoyed gardening and baking.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer F. Mechum in 1992; son Gene Mechum in 1996; brothers Ernest, Clifton, Curtis and Culvert Brewer; and sisters Bracie Ridings, Thelma Dull, Pauline Hart and Lorene Clinard.
She is survived by her sons Don Mechum of Carson City and Murray Mechum of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; daughters Betty Green of Folsom, Calif., and Dena Mechum of Carson City; brother Clay Brewer of Winston-Salem; and grandchildren Julie Martin, Sean Segal, Cadie Lockhart, Kathleen Green, and Andrew, Madeline and Jenna Mechum and great-grandchild Jacob Lockhart.
Burial will be at Carson Gardens Cemetery in Carson City.
Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
