Patients insured by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield still can use Carson-Tahoe Hospital for most services as usual -- at least through March 21.
The hospital and health insurance carrier have been unable to agree on an extension of the current contract, which was set to expire today.
However, hospital officials announced Tuesday the existing contract has been extended.
Hospital spokesman Richard Linkul said two representatives from Blue Cross met with hospital officials Tuesday in an effort to reach an agreement.
Blue Cross has had a contract with Carson-Tahoe Hospital since 1994.
"We're optimistic and hopeful," Linkul said. "We're giving each other additional time and the negotiations have positive momentum, and it is hoped, that both parties will make compromises and concessions for the good of community."
Whatever the outcome, Carson-Tahoe Hospital will continue to treat emergencies regardless of who pays for the services. Patients will be able to use services at Carson-Tahoe Hospital, but they will be "out of network" and will pay more, a recent press release said.
"Hopefully, a mutually agreed upon, multi-year contract will be consummated by the end of this nine-day extension period," said Ed Epperson, hospital chief executive officer.
If negotiations fail, the cancellation would not affect non-elective, or more acute care, and is not expected to seriously affect Carson-Tahoe Hospital's market share or its ability to build its new regional medical center, Epperson said.
