You probably don't need excuses to go out and have fun this weekend, but here's one anyway: Spring is a mere five days away. Look at this weekend as a little bit of pregame to set the tone of the season to come.

And if you happen to be grounded? We won't hold it against you. Just make sure to make up for the time you lost next weekend.

-- Think you've got some talent? Mr. Poor's Roadhouse, at the Carson City Airport, is looking for local bands to play all-ages shows on Saturdays. Call Richard at 883-4363.

-- Don't be shy. Ring up the Youth Company at Nevada Performing Arts for information about how you can get involved with its seasonal performances. The company is seeking eight advanced ballet dancers age 12 and up, and eight intermediate dancers age 9 and up. Call 284-5000.

-- You won't need a picnic basket for Billinghurst Middle School's 'Into the Woods Jr.' Tickets are $2 for students, $5 for everyone else. The school is located at 6685 Chesterfield Lane in Reno. Call 746-5834.

-- See what your peers can accomplish when armed with a pen, pencil or paint. The Youth Art Month exhibit on display at VSA Arts of Nevada, 135 N. Sierra St. in Reno, showcases work from local middle and high school students. Call 826-6100.

-- A harmonica just sounds so romantic. Bring a date to check out Norman Buffalo and the Knockouts at the Upstage Center Theatre, 900 Mallory Way, at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $22.50. Call 882-8900.

-- Watch out for the white stuff. The Lahontan Audubon Society hosts a birding trip to Pyramid Lake. Meet at the Pyramid Lake Marina at 8 a.m. if you can get up that early. Day-use fee for vehicles is $5. Call 848-4585.

-- Get the answers to all your exams ... or at least you can try. The Odyssey Bookstore, 1557 S. Virginia St. in Reno, offers a class at at 2 p.m. on how to open up your psychic abilities. Call 329-2005.

-- You don't have to rhyme to participate in a poetry workshop themed, Writing Poetry for the Soul. The session starts at 3 p.m. at Sierra Arts Gallery, 17 S. Virginia St. in Reno. Call 329-2787.
