120 YEARS AGO

County Commissioners are departing from the old custom of advertising for services rendered the county, holding that where the pay does not amount to more than $50 the calling for bids is not obligatory. It is unjust to taxpayers as well as competitors and smacks, to say the least, of favoritism. Married, last evening, William D. McLuen to Miss Emma Becksted, at the bride's residence.

100 YEARS AGO

Three cars (rail) loaded with bees passed through to Mason Valley where they will stock a bee farm. Mason Valley is one of the best alfalfa districts in the state and the result will follow that Mason Valley honey will be in demand. Bee culture in this state has grown to be a big industry.

70 YEARS AGO

Notary column says every so often a prisoner from the state prison attempts an escape. In practically every instance such men are rounded up. The country especially in winter, is a barrier to such escapes. White man is surely a strange animal.

50 YEARS AGO

Mills Bros., appearing at the Mapes Hotel, were a top draw at the benefit show for the Red Cross at the civic auditorium. Ralph Thomas, chapter chairman, said nearly $200 was raised. Hal Pruden, Mapes orchestra leader, was master of ceremonies and pianist.

20 YEARS AGO

Ceremonies at Corpus Christi Church at Stewart -- Bishop Gorman installed the first officers of the new Carson City unit of Knights of Columbus. Chapter officers included Ray Carlson as grand knight.

10 YEARS AGO

Largest international woman's gathering ever held will kick off the 150th anniversary activities of the Relief Society, the women's organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints...Salt Lake City Tabernacle...6,000 women.
