Carson High graduate Donovan Osborne went from having a chance to crack the New York Mets' starting rotation to being released by the club on Tuesday.
Osborne received a chance to start for the Mets a week ago Monday in spring training game against the Baltimore Orioles. The Mets were looking at possibly giving Osborne a chance to compete for the fifth spot in the starting rotation.
But Osborne was roughed up against the Orioles, allowing two two-run home runs in two innings of work. Osborne hadn't pitched since that outing.
He made six appearances for the Mets, posting a 9.00 earned run average over 10 innings while striking out five and finishing with a 1-1 record. It had been expected that Osborne would be assigned to the Mets Triple A affiliate in Norfolk.
But with an already crowed pitching staff, the Mets decided to release Osborne, who enjoyed his most success as a starting pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Osborne also pitched for the Chicago Cubs last year before an injury cut his season short.
