Even though its score soared, the Carson High golf team improved on its performance from a week ago.
Scores were understandably higher than a week ago in extremely windy conditions on Wednesday in a Northern 4A tournament at Wildcreek in Sparks. Carson placed second in the event with a 433.
That score was 29 strokes higher than the 404 Carson had last week when it placed third. Galena won for the second straight week, shooting a 422, 42 strokes higher than the 380 the Grizzlies shot to place first the week before.
"It was quity windy obviously and the scores were indicative of that," Carson coach Paul Croghan said.
Douglas was also able to improve on its finish from a week ago, placing third with a 440. The Tigers were followed by Reed (448), Spanish Springs (449), Fallon (470), Reno (473) and South Tahoe (475).
Carson was again led by freshman J.T. Cockerill, who fired an 81 on the par-72 course to tie for fourth overall. "He has a good work ethic," Croghan said.
Galena was led by Matt Kinsinger, who shot a 78. Other results for Carson were: Tim Hohl (86), Tyson Roser (87), Andrew Meyer (88), Steve McQuirk (91) and Shawn Heinz (94).
"I was really surprised 433 was second," Croghan said. But Croghan noted that Wildcreek is a difficult course even in favorable conditions.
"I thought 410, 415 might win it, which wasn't that far off," he said.
The next tournament will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Sierra Nevada Golf Ranch.
