Carson girls swimming defeats Reed

Despite being without its top two performers, the Carson High girls swim team was able to pull out a win over Reed on Saturday.

The CHS girls defeated Reed 159-139 at the Carson Aquatic Center. Carson was without Lauren Costella and Tara Theilemann, who are both preparing for the U.S. National Championships.

But Carson received key performances from Katie Wandel, Jessica Goddard, Lauren Metcalf and Julie Struble to help make up for the loss of Costella and Theilemann.

In addition, Carson received a huge lift from its divers. Charity Ricks won in diving while Ila Bottoms took second and Alyssa Jensen was third to complete the 1-2-3 sweep. Without the diving, Carson outscored Reed 140-139.

Meanwhile, the Carson boys raced virtually against themselves in a 140-12 win over Reed, which had just one swimmer. The Senators were also without Kiel Costella, who is competing in the Far Western Regional Championships.

Goddard and Wandel were double winners. Goddard won the 100-yard butterfly (one minute, 7.89 seconds) and the 200 individual medley (2:28.90).

Wandel won the 50 free (25.88) and the 100 free (57.54). Lateisha Lindemann took third in the 50 free.

Carson also went 1-2-3 in the 500 free. Metcalf won in 5:49.38, Hillary Schlager took second (5:50.24) and Struble placed third. Carson coach Monica Weaver said the performances by Wandel and Goddard and the 1-2-3 sweeps in the 500 free and diving were all keys to the win.

In the 200 free, Struble took second and Patty Capistrant placed third while Paige Thayer was third in the 100 backstroke for Carson.

Reed won all three relays, although if Carson had Costella and Theilemann, Weaver said her team would have likely won two of the relays. Costella and Theilemann would have also obviously provided more scoring in the individual events as well.

In the boys meet, Todd Stroup, Jeff Stroup, Justin Barber and Jake Oxoby posted a 1;54.76 in the 200 medley relay. Jeff Stroup won the 200 free (2:05.48) while Adrian Zeh took second.

In the 200 I.M., Barber won in 2:04.48 while Todd Stroup tooks second. Oxoby won the 50 free (25.23) while Barber won the 100 fly (58.33). Oxoby took second in the 100 fly.

In the 100 free, Andrew Cardinal won in 57.22. Zeh won the 500 free (5:35.61) while Cardinal took second. Kevin Millim, Cardinal, Todd Stroup and Jesse Steele posted a 1:49.14 in the 200 free relay while Tood Stroup won the 100 back (1:07.39) and Jeff Stroup won the 100 breaststroke (1:12.31).

Barber, Millim, Cardinal and Jeff Stroup posted a 3:59.23 in the 400 free relay. Brent Server won the diving while Travis Hall placed second.

Weaver said she was pleased that even though they were swimming against themselves, many on the boys team were able to improve their times.
