Led by several local players, the Dana College baseball team recently won the Great Plains Athletic Conference regular season title.
Dana, an NAIA school in Nebraska, finished the regular season at 30-21 and 21-5 in conference. Dana began competition in the conference tournament last Thursday.
In recent action, Douglas High graduates Kenny Nicoll, Tommy Bond and Chad Cooke and Carson High graduate Craig Martin all played key roles in a doubleheader sweep of Midland Lutheran, winning 5-4 and 7-6.
Nicoll got the wins in both games. In game one, Bond and Cooke combined to go 4-for-6 with a home run. In game two, Nicoll and Martin combined to go 4-for-7 with three RBI, three runs and a home run.
Martin and Yerington's Nate Landa were among the seniors honored by Dana in between games during the doubleheader.
Heading into the conference tournament, Nicoll had a 4-1 record with a 0.87 earned run average. He had 11 strikouts in 10.1 innings. Landa had a 3-4 record.
Nicoll was also hitting .354 (57-for-161) with four home runs and 34 RBI. Martin was hitting .302 (38-for-126) with five home runs with 26 RBIs. Cooke was hitting .289 (28-for-97) with a home run and 18 RBI and Bond was hitting .269 (21-for-78) with two home runs and 17 RBI.
