Dayton High's Bridgette Galles qualified for the NIAA 3A State Championships in four events to lead an outstanding effort by Lyon County athletes in the Northern 3A Track Championships.
Galles won the 100 hurdles (17.53) and the high jump (5-3). She also placed second in the 300 hurdles (51.11) and second in the triple jump (32 feet, 8 3/4 inches) to lead Dayton's girls to a fourth place finish with 72 points.
Yerington's Lacie Whitlock placed third in the 300 hurdles (51.37) and fifth in the 100 hurdles (18.28) to qualify for the state meet. Dayton's 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams also placed first. Billy Mountjoy, Jesse Gutierrez, Stephen Novello and Ben Woolman won the 1,600 relay (3:32.11) and Billy Mountjoy, Joey Mountjoy, Woolman and Novello won the 3,200 relay (8:31.49).
Yerington's Randy Shumate also had an outstanding meet, winning the long jump (21-5) and took third in the triple jump (42-1 3/4 ) behind teammate Wes Thomas, who took second (42-6 1/4 ).
The boys pole vault competition also lived up to expectations as Fernley's Pete Borda placed second (13-0), Yerington's Sean Cliften took third (12-3) and Dayton's Joey Mountjoy placed fourth (11-6). Fernley's boys placed fourth with 75 points.
Yerington's Melinda Young won the girls pole vault (9-6) while Fernley's Sherelynn Purcell tied for third.
Dayton's Sabrina Cantrell qualified in three events, placing fifth in the 400 (1:04.57), fifth in the 800 (2:32.60) and fourth in the 200 (29.82).

Girls 3,200 relay -- Dayton (Vadira Montes, Christie Selmi, Melanie Reale, Bonnie O'Brien), fifth, 11:19.35; girls long jump -- Laura Silvera, Fernley, fourth; girls shot put -- Brittany Wilkison, Yerington, third, 33-6 1/2; boys 100 -- Randy Shumate, Yerington, third, 11.71; boys 200 -- Thomas, third, 23.67; boys 400 -- Thomas, third, 52.38.
