More volunteers

There is still a need for additional volunteers for the 14th annual Kids' Fishing Derby.

That special outdoor event for the children of this general area will to be held at Lampe Park in Gardnerville on May 31-June 1.

The Kids' Fishing Derby, one of the largest in the western United States, is open to all area youngsters, ages 3-12.

It annually attracts more than 2,400 youngsters during the two-day event.

This year's derby staff is seeking additional volunteers to assist with the derby.

Among the activities requiring volunteers are:

Set up for the derby and/or cleaning up after the derby.

Manning the registration desk for each session.

Selling doughnuts and hot coffee in the mornings.

Supplying "loaner" fishing poles and fishing reels to those youngsters who don't have their own equipment.

Baiting fishing hooks with Power Bait.

Manning the entry gates and collecting tickets.

Untangling lines, snarls or snags during the derby.

Netting fish that are caught.

Weighing the trout after they have been caught.

Cleaning the trout.

Manning the prize table.

Working in the snack wagon.

Cooking hamburgers and hot dogs.

Please Note:

No walk-up volunteers will be accepted on the day of the derby.

Any volunteer under the age of 16 must have a sponsor and must have that sponsor oversee their activities during the derby.

There will be a general volunteer meeting on Saturday, May 17, at 9:00 a.m. at the Lampe Park Pavilion and again on Wednesday, May 28 at 6:00 p.m. at the Pavilion.
