Chance of thunderstorms expected today

Swimmers were out enjoying the cool waters at the Carson City Aquatic Center outdoor pool as the area experienced record heat again Wednesday. Temperatures in the region continued to soar as Reno reached a record for the date of 97 and Carson hit a high of 91.

A slight shift may be in store beginning this afternoon with the chance of thunderstorms rolling in from the California coast that may bring showers and storms intermittently through Friday.

National Weather Service meteorologists in Reno are predicting light thunderstorm activity but expect the storm will pass and leave slightly cooler, clear weather for the weekend.

Record heat pulled Western Nevada out of winter in a hurry as a high pressure system moved into the region, said Chris Jordan, a Weather Service meteorologist.

"It seems like it was winter a week ago," Jordan said. "There's a big ridge of high pressure over us; it's just been warming up since."

Some Carson residents took advantage of the heat Wednesday by soaking in the outdoor pool at the Aquatic Center. The pool opened last week for the summer and staff expects to open the pool's outdoor slide June 7.

The pool was resurfaced this year in preparation for the season, said Kurt Meyer, superintendent of operations at the center.

Dave Miller, of Carson City, swam laps during his lunch break Wednesday.

"I enjoy it," Miller said. "It's a great break in the day and it's wonderful exercise. And the weather is nice."

The Weather Service predicts mostly sunny skies in the Carson-Minden area today, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon with a 20 percent chance of precipitation and thunderstorms. A high temperature for the day is expected to be 85 to 95 degrees.

Thursday night, lingering showers and thunderstorms are expected with the area staying mostly cloudy overnight with lows between 49 to 59 degrees.

Slightly cooler temperatures are predicted between 78 to 88 degrees Friday when it is expected to be party cloudy with a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms in the morning and clearing in the afternoon.

The weekend weather looks clear and mostly sunny, with highs Saturday and Sunday predicted to reach into the 80s, Jordan said.

A record high for the date was set Tuesday in Reno when thermometers reached 95 degrees. The previous record was 93, set in 1919. Reno reached another record Wednesday, previously set at 93 degrees, as the city reached 97 degrees by 3 p.m.

Carson City was 2 degrees short of the previous record for the date set in 1984 of 93 degree.

Lap Swim: Monday through Friday from 5:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., 5 to 8:30 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Open Swim: Monday through Friday from 6:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.
