State Farm increases homeowner insurance

State Farm Insurance has won permission to increase homeowner insurance rates for the second time this year.

The company's initial increase approved by the Insurance Commission was for 17.9 percent effective in March. Insurance Commissioner Alice Molasky-Arman initially approved only part of the total 24.9 percent request, saying some of the data was inconsistent.

The initial increase included 19 percent more for non-tenant homeowners, 18.3 percent for condominium owners, one-tenth of a percent for renters and 25 percent for business property.

The company supplied more support data for the rest of its requested rate increase. Molasky-Arman said this week she has approved an additional 5.2 percent overall rate hike including 5 percent more for non-tenant homeowners and 18.6 percent for condominium owners.

She said the increases will generally hit hardest for non-tenant insureds in Carson City, Douglas County and Clark County where rates will rise about 25 percent overall. Those in Washoe County will see the lowest increase -- about 7 percent.
