Strong performances in calf roping and steer wrestling on Saturday helped Aaron Heberger of the Carson High School Rodeo Club ride off with the all-around cowboy award from the Boulder City High School Rodeo.
Heberger, a Washoe Valley resident and Galena High senior who competes for the Carson club, placed second in both the calf roping and steer wrestling events to earn his first all-around award of Nevada's 2003-04 season.
Heberger nearly won both events on the opening day of the two-day Boulder City rodeo. He posted a time of 11.74 seconds in calf roping, just 12-hundredths of a second behind the winning mark of 11.62 by A.J. Duncan of Lovelock. Heberger's time of 6.31 seconds in steer wrestling was less than three-tenths behind Fallon's Sterling Lambert (6.05).
Heberger represented Carson in calf roping at the National High School Finals Rodeo in Farmington, N.M., this past July.
There were other highlights for Carson during the weekend. Among those, Jeremy Porter and Kesten Denny placed third and fourth in Saturday's steer wrestling with respective times of 9.65 and 11.07. Denny came back to place third in the event on Sunday.
Also, Ty Padilla placed third in bull riding on Saturday with a score of 65 points and Jessi Bartorelli was third in Sunday's bareback riding with 62 points.
Haylee Turley of Alamo was the all-around cowgirl recipient after winning the goat tying while placing second in breakaway roping and girls cutting on Saturday.
