Galena High's Chase Correira has been chosen as one of the six male national finalists for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award.
Six male and six female student-athletes were chosen as finalists out of 14,150 seniors nominated from across the country. Correira, who runs cross country, has one a $1,000 donation for Galena. Correira was chosen as one of the finalists after winning the Nevada state award.
He will also travel to New York on Dec. 12 to participate in the Heisman weekend festivities. During the weekend, one male and one female national winners will be selected for the Wendy's Heisman award.
The Wendy's Heisman National Winners will receive an additional $2,500 for their high schools. The national winners will be be announced in ceremonies to be broadcast on ESPN2 at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14.
Student-athletes are considered on such criteria as athletic and academic accomplishments and community service.
