Carson tennis sweeps South Tahoe

The Carson girls tennis almost assuredly wrapped up a home match in the first round of the zone playoffs with a 33-12 win at South Tahoe on Tuesday.

Carson (8-1, 7-1) will almost assuredly finish second in the Sierra League. The Senators will likely host a first round playoff match this Tuesday.

"Our singles and doubles did great," said Carson coach Diane Baker about Tuesday's match.

Michelle Van Epps pulled off an impressive sweep after falling behind 1-4 in her first match. She went on to win 17 straight games in sweeping her matches 6-4, 6-0, 6-0.

Natalie Rogers swept 6-0, 6-1, 6-1 and Kelsey Joyce swept 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles, Staci Cobler and Jenae Jeppson swept 6-2, 7-5, 6-3. "They played probably their best tennis of the season," Baker said. "They just had some wonderful shots."

Katie Elverum and Amber Whitworth won 6-4 and Whitworth teamed with Shannon Arnold for an impressive 6-4 win. "They both just had excellent ground strokes," said Bakera about Whitworth and Arnold.

CARSON BOYS 33, SOUTH TAHOE 12

It's likely that the Carson High boys tennis team will miss the playoffs by one point that was decided by a tiebreaker, despite its win over South Tahoe.

North Tahoe will likely earn the Sierra League's final spot into the playoffs based on its 23-22 win over the Senators. The deciding set of the match was a 7-6 win in a tiebreaker for North Tahoe.

Against South Tahoe, Brandon Waterman swept 6-2, 6-1, 6-1. "That was really a great effort," Carson coach Pat Houlihan said.

Justin Menesini and Nick Rebholz also swept in doubles, winning 6-3, 7-5, 6-3. "They're so steady," Houlihan said.

In singles, Josh Caron won two of three, 6-2, 7-5. "He's one of our better players," Houlihan said.

In doubles, Bryt Lewis and Tyler Lewis won two of three, 7-6 (7-4) and 6-3. Andy Roullard won two of three in singles, 6-4, 6-4 and Todd Crowell and John Kim won 7-5 in doubles.

In other matches, Adrian Zeh and Ben Peterson won 6-2 in doubles, Brandon Ellis won 7-5 in singles and Chris Bassett played well in a 2-6 loss.
