This is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

We all have been touched by cancer in some way, either through family or a friend or co-worker. It forever changes us.

To be a survivor of cancer is a testament in itself. Kathy Eghion and her daughter Adrienne walked three miles this weekend in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk for a cure. Kathy has had breast cancer, and as a six-year survivor, she knows all too well the toll it takes.

On Tuesday, Carson-Tahoe Hospital have a seminar on breast cancer, "So You Found a Lump. Now What?" Speakers will review new technology concerning genetic counseling, and pathologists will give insight on breast cancer awareness.

This month is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Tonight at Lampe Park in Gardnerville, the Carson Valley Soroptimists will hold its sixth annual candle vigil for victims of domestic violence. Soroptimist International of Carson Valley and Family Support Council of Douglas County will release 20 doves symbolizing freedom for victims. It is a very emotional and moving event. Wear your purple ribbons and bring your prayers.

Last week, Kiwanis of Carson City elected and installed Mike Crossley as president. Kiwanis members are fund-raising with a golf tournament to help students in Carson High School's Vocational Education Programs. The money will go directly to a graduate who is planning to attend college in a vocational field, such as welding, automotive or culinary arts.

Carson High School basketball's Sixth Man Booster Club fund-raiser includes food and drinks. The annual Beer and Brats' silent auction will offer two tickets to the "Big Game" -- Cal Fullerton vs. Stanford -- on Nov. 22 with parking pass included. Support the CHS basketball teams and call to purchase a ticket from any coach or athlete.

What: Candlelight walk from the park to the Family Support Council of Douglas County's parking area for a commemorative program with Lori Fralick, domestic violence ombudsman for the Nevada Attorney General's Office as keynote speaker. Others on the program include Karen Edwards, executive director of Family Support Council of Douglas County; Douglas County Sheriff Ron Pierini; John Amundson, Purple Ribbon Coalition; and a victim of domestic violence.
