Restaurateur arrested in embezzlement

The manager of a Carson City restaurant was arrested Tuesday, accused of stealing $11,000 from his employer.

Al Lim, 34, posted a $1,500 bond Wednesday and was released from the Carson City Jail where he was being held on suspicion of felony embezzlement.

According to Detective Steve Johnson of the Carson City Sheriff's Department, employees of Red's Old 395 Grill in the 1000 block of South Carson Street reported Oct. 13 there had been a burglary and approximately $10,000 was missing. Johnson said in his report he found it unlikely a burglary was committed.

On Monday, Johnson said, he received information from several witnesses claiming Lim had embezzled about $11,000 to sustain a gambling habit.

One witness stated he met Lim at the Hilton Casino in Reno two days before the alleged robbery, where Lim admitted he'd taken approximately $7,500 - the bank deposit for Oct. 10 - and $3,500 from operating funds kept at Red's, Johnson wrote in his report.

Lim allegedly admitted to the witness he'd lost the money on high-stakes blackjack.

Another shift manager at Red's allegedly told Johnson he'd confronted Lim about the $3,500 shortage, and Lim said he would take care of it.

Johnson said no deposit was made Friday through Sunday but on Monday Lim deposited $11,000 into the Red's account.
