Danburg wins SuperSeries crown

While Jason Fensler won the battle, it was Carson City's Chet "the Jet" Danburg who won the war, capturing the 2003 Sierra Mountain SuperSeries championship crown.


Fensler, a Southwest Tour driver, dominated to win the 100 lap Sierra Mountain SuperSeries race presented by the Plaza Hotel and 76 Racing Fuel held this past weekend at All American Speedway in Roseville, Calif.


In the end, it was Fensler wining by a full straight away against an evenly matched field. Danburg finished fourth in clinching the overall title.

Three former Pro Stock champions were in the field making rare appearances at the quarter-mile paved oval: Chuck Glick of Citrus Heights, Jim Courage Jr. of Roseville, and Howard Nevens of North Highlands.


Dan Farrington of Orangevale was the top-qualifier with a 13.37 second lap. The top 10 cars were separated by just two miles per hour in their lap times. Glick, who qualified third fastest, won the dash.


The invert for the race was seven, putting the husband and wife team of Mike Mansch and Shannon Brady-Mansch on the front row.


Mike Mansch led until lap 15 when points leader Byron Gonzales of Carmichael and Glick made contact in lapped traffic causing exterior damage to both cars.


As the field came around for the restart Mike Mansch exited with a flat tire allowing Fensler to move into the lead position.


Glick restarted at the back of the field and moved up to fifth by lap 20. On lap 25, the yellow came out forcing Fensler to sacrifice his large lead. Farrington, who started seventh, challenged Fensler briefly on the restart but Fensler quickly pulled away.


Nevens and Melissa Davis tangled on lap 38, ending Davis' day. Dan Cherry of Sacramento was also damaged in the incident forcing Nevens and Cherry to the pits for repairs.


Farrington fell out of the race on lap 66 with transmission problems, moving Glick into the second position.


An intense three-car battle for third continued until lap 74, when Courage and Shannon Mansch got tangled sending Mansch's car into the infield.


On the restart, Glick and Fensler made contact in turn one. Fensler kept the car under control and drove away with the lead position for good.


The top-five finishers were: Fensler, Glick, Courage, Danburg, and Brady-Mansch.
